What are superseded drawings?
A superseded drawing is a revision that has been replaced by a newer one, retired from use but kept on the record and marked so nobody mistakes it for the current sheet.
Supersession is what revision control does at the moment a change lands. The new revision becomes the one to work from, the previous one steps back into the history, and the record shows which is which. Both halves matter: the live sheet has to be obvious, and the replaced one has to survive.

The two get confused because both take a drawing out of use. Only one of them keeps the record. Tidying a folder by removing old revisions looks like good housekeeping right up until someone asks what was issued, and when.

Why superseded revisions have to stay retrievable.
An asset owner is asked about the past far more often than the present. Each of the questions below is answered by a revision that stopped being current years ago.
A contract, a claim, or an insurance question turns on which revision was current on a given date and who held it. The superseded revision and the transmittal that issued it are the evidence.
When something fails, the question is what the design said when the work was done. That answer sits in the revision current at the time, which by then is several revisions back.
